IBM Earnings are nice to see
It is nice to see positive news about Business than all negative news. It seems like when ever I watch the news lately they keep talking about Company Sales and Profits are down. Companies are laying off employees or closing stores. It seems so bloom and gloom. I know I have a few friends who are looking for a job and they get discouraged when they watch the news. But as you can see below, not all is bad. Look at how good IBM did last quarter:
IBM Reports 2009 First-Quarter Results
ARMONK, NY - 20 Apr 2009:
- Diluted earnings of $1.70 per share, up 4 percent;
- Reiterates full-year 2009 earnings of at least $9.20 per share;
- Free cash flow of $1 billion, up $450 million;
- Gross profit margin of 43.4 percent, up 1.9 points;
- Net income of $2.3 billion, down 1 percent; net margin up 1.1 points;
- Revenue of $21.7 billion, impacted by strong U.S. dollar, down 11 percent, down 4 percent adjusting for currency;
- Software pre-tax margin up 2.9 points; income up 5 percent;
- Global Services pre-tax margin up 1.6 points; income up 4 percent;
- Total services signings up 10 percent, longer-term signings up 27 percent, both adjusting for currency;
- 16 services deals greater than $100 million;
- Growth markets revenue up 4 percent adjusting for currency;
- Returned nearly $2.5 billion to shareholders in dividends and share repurchases.
IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced first-quarter 2009 diluted earnings of $1.70 per share compared with diluted earnings of $1.64 per share in the first quarter of 2008, an increase of 4 percent as reported. First-quarter net income was $2.30 billion compared with $2.32 billion in the first quarter of 2008, a decrease of 1 percent. Total revenues for the first quarter of 2009 of $21.7 billion decreased 11 percent (4 percent, adjusting for currency) from the first quarter of 2008. “IBM continued to perform well in a very difficult economic environment. This was due to our long-term strategic focus: shifting into software and services, divesting of commodity businesses, and creating solutions that help clients reduce cost and conserve capital. At the same time we have a disciplined approach to cost and expense management giving us a strong financial position,” said Samuel J. Palmisano, IBM chairman, president and chief executive officer. Business is not all bad
If you look around or search the Internet you will find a lot of businesses that are doing well. There are a lot of companies that are strong currently. Some places I shop they seem always busy which is nice to see. I know from my friends who work at many different businesses it is common to hear them say how they are still concerned about the future and working hard at controlling expenses.
News affecting the Economy
I do feel that the negative News about the Economy has taken a toll on the economy recovering. I do feel a lot of people have cut back some on their spending. I know some of my friends say their average order is down from a year ago. Maybe if the News only talked about Positive Business like IBM than maybe our economy would be doing better.
Paying off your Debt
Now that is not all back on people cutting back their spending if they have debt and are paying it down. Debt can really be a burden on a person so it is a area that would be good to focus on paying it off before buying things you want. If you have debt and are not able to reduce it each month, I suggest you go get help or really go through your budget and see what you can reduce spending on so you can pay down your debt.
Bad Credit
Yes we want people to spend more money each month to help the Economy recover. But it doesn’t help the Economy if people charge the items they purchase and then don’t pay them off. Some people have said that also more people are writing bad checks more than ever.

I agree. The news is way to Negative. If my Golf game showed improvement every quarter like IBm did last quarter I would be on the Pro Tour. Keep up the good work.
