Hypnosis study for Hair Loss

In the August, 2006 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, there is an article titled: Hypnotherapeutic management of alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is a hair loss condition which usually effects the scalp though it can sometimes affect other areas of the body. The researchers wanted to see how hypnosis would help with the emotional impact of sudden hair loss. Following are their results from working with 28 patients:

“In all, 21 patients, 9 with alopecia totalis or alopecia universalis and 12 with extensisve AA, were analyzed during a 5-year period. After treatment, all patients had a significantly lower score for anxiety and depression. Scalp hair growth of 75% to 100% was seen in 12 patients after 3 to 8 sessions of hypnotherapy. Total growth occurred in 9 of these 12 patients, including 4 patients with alopecia universalis and 2 with ophiasis. In 5 patients, a significant relapse occurred.

The conclusion of the researchers was:“Hypnotherapy may enhance the mental well-being of patients with AA and it may improve clinical outcome.”

Hypnosis and Cancer

November 3rd, 1958 Life Magazine article about hypnosis which discussed how hypnosis helps people with many things including the pain of severe burns, cancer and more. n volume25 of The American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis, Bernauer W. Newton wrote an article titled: The Use of Hypnosis in The Treatment of Cancer Patients. From the documented case of mindbody healing: Of the 162 patients who participated in the hypnosis/psychotherapy session, Newton states that for 160 of them “a significant improvement in life quality was achieved.” Newton realized that an improvement in life quality would give patients a greater ability and desire to overcome the cancer.

In 1974, T.S. Eliseo wrote a fascinating cancer healing article published in the Vol.22 edition of the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. Eliseo documents how a woman experienced a healing that is difficult to imagine because she was judged to have terminal cancer. She had already had breast cancer that necessitated the removal of several body parts and then was diagnosed with having secondary cancers in her skill. After 3 hypnosis sessions she was discharged from the hospital because of significant improvement and a 12 month follow-up revealed that she had not been re-hospitalized and that she was living at home.
